ECPI Faculty Sees Alumni through Tough Times

When Rachel Spivey was attending ECPI University's Newport News campus, her plate was full juggling parenting and pursuing a degree in Healthcare Administration full time. Or so she thought.

Towards the end of her degree program, Rachel's mother sadly passed away. She dropped everything to fly to her mother and was met with unwavering support from her instructors, who allowed her to continue her assignments remotely to stay on track.

“When I returned to class my first day back, my advisor, Cindy Richards-Myles, came to class to check on me to make sure I was doing okay," she said. "That meant the world to me, and her support is something that will stay with me.”

With the support and kindness of her ECPI family, Rachel graduated and is currently utilizing her degree as a Talent Acquisition Consultant in Human Resources for Duke University Health System in North Carolina.

In her role at Duke University Health System, she serves as an internal consultant to leaders and stakeholders to effectively lead all aspects of the recruiting process. She oversees position management, recruitment, diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, as well as market and position data analysis and applicant tracking system data integrity. She also initiates and monitors background checks, credentialing and onboarding processes, drives continuous improvement while ensuring the policies are within compliance.

Her advice to current ECPI students? “Focus on good grades, put one foot in front of the other, never give up and remember that it's worth it," she said. "Whenever you find yourself in doubt, remember the quote from Nelson Mandela: 'It always seems impossible until it's done.' ”

Rachel tells ECPI students and alumni that if they "are interested in opportunities at Duke University Health System, please reach out. I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have and help you find your next career!”
