ECPI University Nursing Graduate Pays It Forward

Inspiring others in a heartwarming act of generosity, Michelle Tinner, a two-time ECPI University nursing graduate, returned to her alma mater to present a check of $10,000 on January 18th.

The donation will establish a special scholarship fund in Tinner’s name to support students in need of financial assistance at the Newport News campus. This remarkable gesture was inspired by Tinner’s personal journey and the profound impact ECPI University had on her life.

During her time at ECPI University from 2010 to 2012, Tinner faced numerous challenges. She attended full-time classes while also working night shifts to care for her mother, who was suffering from dementia.

Balancing her responsibilities became overwhelming, and she found herself on the brink of eviction. In a moment of desperation, Tinner approached the campus administration, informing them that she had no choice but to drop out of school to seek additional employment. What she didn’t expect was ECPI University’s next step. ECPI utilized a student assistance fund to swiftly provide Tinner and her mother with money to cover their rent. The assistance arrived just in the nick of time, as law enforcement was already present to carry out the eviction.

With the financial burden lifted, Tinner was able to remain in school and successfully complete her studies. ECPI’s compassion and belief in her abilities had a profound impact on Tinner’s life. She recalls the empowering words she received at that time from campus leadership: “Don’t pay me back, pay it forward.” These words fueled her determination to make a difference.

Today, Tinner is the proud owner of Love Thy Neighbor, LLC, a home care agency operating in Virginia and Maryland that employs approximately 300 people. Additionally, she has ventured into entrepreneurship with Pretty Girl Scrubs, a size-inclusive scrub supply company offering scrubs ranging from size XS to 12XL.

During a special check presentation ceremony, Tinner, alongside ECPI University’s Chief Operating Officer Barbara Larar, shared her gratitude and handed over the generous donation of $10,000.

“I created this nursing scholarship because I wanted there to be a fund that could assist students in paying bills, rent, or whatever they need to stay in school,” she told the audience.

Inspired by her incredible generosity, ECPI University’s Larar shared that the university would match her donation, expanding the reach of the fund to benefit students across its Hampton Roads campuses. The ripple effect of Tinner’s kindness will continue to inspire and support future generations of students in need.

Tinner’s inspiring story resonated beyond the check presentation. Recently, she had the honor of addressing the graduates at the Newport News commencement ceremony in May 2023. “Speaking with you today is one of the greatest honors of my life,” she told them.

Michelle Tinner’s selfless act of giving back serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative impact that education and support can have on an individual’s life. Her dedication to paying it forward inspires others to embrace kindness, generosity, and the belief in the potential of every student.
