What Do I Need for Back to School Online?
You might know exactly what supplies are needed to go to school in person. Pencils, pens, backpack, lunchbox, etc. But when you head back to a digital classroom, what do you really need to be successful and what is best left for college students commuting to their classrooms? Here's a look at what really matters for online students.
Make Sure Your Computer is Up for the Challenge
Don't worry, you don't need to run out and buy a new laptop or desktop just to take classes online. But be sure your computer can handle the basic functions you'll need to be successful in class. This includes loading the school's website, researching, running programs such as Microsoft Office, and being able to scan your files for viruses so you don't accidentally try to upload an infected file.
Additionally, many learning management systems (LMS) have smartphone apps. You can often uses these to access grades, look at feedback on assignments, and view to-do lists. If you don't have a smartphone, never fear, this app is not a mandatory part of class. However, it is very convenient to see and review feedback the second it's sent through the system instead of hours later when you get back to your computer.
Make Sure You Are Computer Savvy Enough for Learning Online
Not everyone is a computer genius and to take online classes, you don't need to be. Many schools offer introductory courses to computer programs and general online activities in order to help anyone who might not be a wizard with a keyboard.
That being said, if you're not sure how to turn a computer on, much less use Google, or send a file through your LMS, you might want to study up on your own before school starts do you don't fall behind solely because of your computer skills.
Beyond knowing how to use some programs and features before starting school, be open to learning new ones. You never know what website or software might be required for a class. It can sometimes be scary to have to constantly learn new sites and systems. However, each website or software system you use will help you to be better prepared for the next one. Even when something is frustrating, be persistent. If you have to, ask for help.
Make Sure Your Schedule is Conducive to Online Learning
Although you gain hours not spend in commuting, online learning still comes with a hectic schedule. There's readings, lectures, exercises, tests, and lots more. The only way to fit it all in is to make sure you have enough focused time to concentrate on your education.
The great thing about online education is that you can study and complete assignments from anywhere. You could study at home, go to the local library, even, if your workplace allows it, study during downtime at work. It's wonderful to have a set study time with a regular location that you can count on to be distraction free. But this is not a perfect world and you might not always have access to that.
Regardless of where you do your assignments and how you find the time, you have to find the time and do your assignments in order to be successful. Sometimes this means not being able to go out with friends or family to a fun event. You have to stay focused on your ultimate goal: a college degree. Sacrifices will have to be made.
Most of All, You Need Enthusiasm!
Going back to school wouldn't be complete if you're not excited and passionate about what you're doing. After all, you're studying towards your future career and nothing could be more exciting that than. Prepare yourself, because times will get tough. But if you ever are doubting why you're doing what you're doing, envision yourself on graduation day. Whether you walk across a stage or stay home, that's the day that makes it all worth it.
