What Are College Class Schedules Like for International Students?
Attending school is exciting, attending it while abroad is even more exciting as you get to advance in the career of your choice but you also get to enjoy a new culture while doing so. However, as exciting as being an international student may be, it can also be overwhelming -- especially if you are not used to multi-tasking or have experience learning at an American college. The following is a quick look at what international students can expect when they enroll in an accelerated program such as that offered at ECPI University.
The Basics of Accelerated College Classes
At ECPI University, courses and degree programs are offered via an accelerated schedule. What this means is that classes are sped up so that students can finish them more quickly than in a traditional college semester, thereby allowing students to graduate and start looking for work faster.
With accelerated courses, classes operate on five-week terms with ten terms every year. Generally, students take two courses each term, which offers a good balance without being too overwhelming. At ECPI University, students can choose from morning, evening, and hybrid classes -- these classes are offered on Fridays, Saturdays, and online.
Determining Whether an Accelerated Program is Right for You
Accelerated programs are not a good choice for those students who are not good at multi-tasking or who don't know quite what they want to do. However, when it comes to international students, many are likely to find an accelerated college program a great fit.
The primary reason for this is how much time it saves. Accelerated programs are available in a flexible schedule, which still allows students plenty of time to explore, socialize, and study outside of courses but their fast-tracked timeline means that students will complete material in a much quicker pace.
This has the most obvious benefit of meaning students graduate faster, but also the more intensive courses can be much more enjoyable and conducive to learning. Many students thrive in this style of learning as instead of courses drawn out across four to five months, they become more immersed in the coursework.
Accelerated programs are also a good choice for those students who know exactly what they want to do. However, if you are not sure what career field or if a certain career track is the right choice for you, then an accelerated program might not be a good fit. Therefore, before you enroll, a big question to ask yourself is whether the degree you are pursuing is something you will want to do for the next five years.
Do You Know What you Want to Study?
Where in traditional college settings in courses you will have more opportunities to experiment, in an accelerated program there is a heavier focus on preparing students in their career path. And while experimentation in different majors is good, with an accelerated program much of the coursework builds upon each other and the fast-pace of semesters means that once you start on a track, it will feel more streamlined as you move closer and closer to your graduation.
If you are unsure of what you want to do a year down the line, while you may only have a year committed, you will have already taken ten courses! Therefore, an accelerated program is one of the best decisions that can be made for those who know what they want to do, but may not be a good choice for those still unsure about at least their immediate career goals.
