The medical profession as a whole has grown dramatically since the beginning of the 21st century, and technology has grown right alongside it. Most notably, advancements in medical imaging have allowed doctors to gain greater insight into the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of diseases and health issues. However, these mechanical marvels require a great deal of attention in the way of installation, maintenance, and repair. Thatâs the job of a Medical Imaging Equipment Technologist (MIET). Like many careers within the healthcare field, this one is growing.
Possible Career Tracks
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of 2012 there were 42,300 technologist jobs nationwide with salaries that range from $26,550, the bottom 10%, to more than $72,000, the top 10%. Moreover, employment of MIETs is projected to grow 30 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations.
Imaging equipment repair firms, sub-contractors, and the military all need skilled and properly trained technicians, as do larger healthcare and dental establishments such as physician networks and hospitals. The career track of a Medical Imaging Equipment Technologist begins with field work, as the technician's primary occupation is installing and repairing systems.
In time, more ambitious technologists can decide to go into management and oversee other technologists who handle field work. They can also go into business for themselves either as independent installers/repair technicians or as consultants, advising clients on the most appropriate systems to use in a given situation.
With that said, opportunities for MIETs vary by city. Here are some of the most promising environments for employment in the United States:
- San Diego, California â According to US News, MIETs working in San Diego earn an average salary of $63,160 per year.
- Newark, New Jersey â U.S. News reports that MIETs earn an average of $64,780 in Newark. Moreover, it found that there a 55 ranked hospitals within the entire New York metro area. With so many hospitals in one place, the demand for the installation, maintenance, and repair of medical imaging systems is great.
- Chicago, Illinois â With 36 top-ranked hospitals within a metropolitan region that includes Northwestern University, US News reports that Chicago is among the most vital hospital cities in the country.
- West Palm Beach, Florida - Healthcare IT News has named West Palm Beach as the top city in the nation for hospital care with 9 out of its 12 hospitals being ranked as top performers.
