Tips for Acing Your Cyber and Network Security Program Admissions Interview
If you're considering a degree in cyber and network security you're going to come across many milestones in your path to becoming an industry expert. One big milestone is passing your admissions interview to the college or university of your choice. Admissions representatives want to see your passion for both education and the subject at hand.
In order to ace your interview, you need to examine your motivations for earning this degree. Think carefully about your interests and be able to articulate them. Remember to practice your interview with a friend or family member if you feel nervous. Preparing will help you to feel relaxed and ready for your interview. Let your enthusiasm shine through!
Here are some sample interview questions and tips on how to answer them:
"What sparked Your interest In Cyber Security?"
Think about when you first became aware of cyber security and the pressing need for it. Maybe you read a news article about a big company being hacked. Perhaps a spammer hijacked your email or social media account to annoy all of your contacts with messages about discount sunglasses. Think about how this made you feel and why, after you first became aware of it, you wanted to do something about it.
"Why do you want to study Cyber Security?"
This is a logical follow up to the first question. Cyber security affects many people and many know the importance of it, but not everyone decides they want to study cyber and network security. What made you take a different path?
Remember, no one is looking for a "right" answer here. Think about your reasons for earning a degree in this field and be able to talk about it. When admissions advisors talk to potential students they want to make sure they are admitting those individuals who are dedicated and interested. It will take a lot of determination to earn a degree, if you go in without a clear reason for being there, the advisor you're talking to might not think you're very serious about your education.
"What experience do you have?"
This question might make you nervous, but don't worry! No one is expecting you to have ten years of experience in cyber security before starting your degree. This is where you can talk about any jobs you've had which involve cyber security, how to manage your own digital life, and what you've learned about cyber security on your own.
It's great if you've worked at a helpdesk or have previous experience with technology, but it's definitely not a requirement. What you need to show an admissions counselor is that you're willing to learn and excited about the field.
"What are your goals?"
Getting a degree is just one part of the larger picture. Colleges and universities want to see their graduates move on to positions in their field and find success in the industry. Think about where you want to be after you graduate. Where could you see yourself working?
It's okay if you don't have a clear picture yet. Part of earning your degree is fine-tuning your goals and aspirations. It's perfectly acceptable to say something like, "I'm not sure entirely sure yet, but I think I would like to work to help small businesses keep their digital transactions safe."
