Teach Job Skills: Virginia Lawmakers Urge Colleges and Universities
Why Wait for Traditional Schools to Catch Up? Enroll at ECPI University and Get those Skills Now
Virginia’s House Appropriations Committee is asking Virginia’s state colleges and universities to do a better job offering courses that match what employers are looking for. In a news report published by the Daily Press, Chairman Chris Jones, R-Suffolk, said he’s concerned that Virginia’s public colleges and universities are not preparing students for jobs that employers are struggling to fill. “There is a gap between what we have and what we need,” said Jones.
Moreover, the committee’s vice chairman, Steve Landes, R-Weyers Cave, wants Virginia’s colleges and universities to tackle the shortage of healthcare workers. “We’ve been having some frank discussions with the colleges for a while,” said Landes.
Now the question becomes, how long will this take? Typically, government moves at a relatively slow pace. So, why wait for lawmakers and state educators to act? Why not get an education that can lead to an in-demand job now? You can do that at ECPI University. Skills-based, career-oriented education is all that we do – and we’ve been doing it for more than half a century.
At ECPI University, our Colleges of Technology, Nursing, and Health Science offer programs that align directly with the needs of employers. In fact, many of those employers sit on our academic advisory boards which meet twice a year. They review our curriculum and make recommendations to help us make sure that the courses we are teaching are aligned with the needs of the workplace.
College of Technology
ECPI University’s College of Technology offers Associate’s, Bachelor’s, and Master’s degree programs in a variety of Computer and Information Science and Engineering Technology disciplines, including:

Hands-On Learning
In recent years, hands-on learning has become a popular phrase among educators. At ECPI University however, it’s not a fashionable trend. It’s the way we’ve been teaching since we were founded in 1966. Some people learn better by doing. This enhances both their skill set and for most people, improves retention.
