ECPI University Helps Newport News Grad Begins Second Career

Laja Walker had always wanted to go to college. Shortly after high school, she got married and began a family. Eventually, there would be four children, so it just made sense for her to stay home, which she did for 13 years. While she has no regrets about that at all, she ultimately decided it was time to open the next chapter of her life. Besides, she was recently divorced and was working mostly retail jobs to make ends meet.

Laja was looking for a more substantial career, and she didn’t have a lot of time to waste. That’s what attracted her to ECPI University’s accelerated, year-round programs. After exploring her options, she enrolled in the Simulation and Game Development program. “I really liked the fast pace,” says Laja. “My time at ECPI really helped prepare me for the pace of working in the government contracting world and software development.

“With having our classes only last five weeks and needing to learn new material while still completing an end-product by the end of class, it really sets you up for success working in the software development industry. Also, the faculty is wonderful. I hit a couple rough patches along the way, and they were right there to help me work through it.”

After graduation, Laja began working at Insignia Technology Services on the Army’s Head Start language learning project, creating animations and performing quality assurance for seven of the new language courses it was developing. She then began working on a number of projects for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) as a software engineer, later moving up to the Test Lead role and the Sustainment Team Lead and assisted in creating detailed requirements for the VA’s developers.

Currently, Laja is working for IBM as an Application Tester on the Army Career Tracker (ACT) project for TRADOC out of Fort Eustis. “I am using the development and database skills that I learned while at ECPI University to help me create the test scripts and queries I need to perform software testing for the ACT project,” she says. “It’s a really great job and I would never even known about it if it wasn’t for ECPI University’s Career Services Department. Sometimes I think that graduates forget that ECPI provides us all with career services for life. That is an extremely valuable benefit. I guess it’s just another reason why I am so glad I decided to attend ECPI University!”
