Samsung Expansion Brings new Manufacturing Plant to South Carolina
ECPI University in Columbia and Greenville have Graduates Ready to Go
Global electronics and appliance giant Samsung has announced plans to invest nearly $400 million dollars in a new appliance manufacturing facility in Newberry, South Carolina. Projected to open in early 2018, the operation is expected to employ approximately 950 people, many with advanced manufacturing skills. “For nearly 40 years, Samsung has steadily expanded our operations in the United States, creating thousands of jobs and investing billions of dollars in cutting-edge manufacturing facilities, research and development,” said Samsung Electronics America chief executive Tim Baxter in a news report published in The State.
“With this investment, Samsung is reaffirming its commitment to expanding its U.S. operations and deepening our connection to its American consumers, engineers, and innovators who are driving global trends in consumer electronics.” With nearly half a million employees worldwide, Samsung is one the largest manufacturers of smartphones, televisions, cameras, appliances, and network systems on earth.
Company officials say they selected the Newberry location based on its access to transportation, robust supply chain, and skilled workforce. Samsung is just one of many manufacturers who are establishing operations throughout the Palmetto state.
ECPI University was among the first educators to recognize the resurgence of domestic manufacturing and the new kind of worker that would be needed to staff these advanced technological facilities – workers who could program production lines, work with robotics, and troubleshoot advanced electronic and mechanical systems. That’s why ECPI created two degree programs directly aligned with the skills required to work in advanced manufacturing.
Our nearby Columbia campus offers an Associate of Applied Science in Electronics Engineering Technology (EET) which can prepare you to work with:
- Data Acquisition and Control Systems
- Analog and Digital Electronics
- Computer Hardware
- Computer Networks
This EET program offers the quickest path to the workplace because we operate on a year-round, accelerated schedule, which means you can earn your Associate’s degree in as little as 1.5 years.
ECPI University’s Greenville campus, also nearby, offers a Bachelor’s program in what’s called Mechatronics, which includes skills-based coursework in the three key areas that drive advanced manufacturing: electronics, mechanical engineering technology, and computer information systems. In addition to EET curriculum, you can also develop skills in:
- Applied Mechanics
- Hydraulics and Pneumatics
- Microcontrollers
- Testing and measuring instruments.
- Materials Science
And through that same accelerated, year-round format, you can earn your Bachelor of Science Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology with a concentration in Mechatronics in just 2.5 years.
