Get Advanced Manufacturing Skills for These Jobs at ECPI University

Rolls-Royce North America has announced that it will add 100 new jobs to its advanced manufacturing facility located in Prince George County, Virginia, just outside of Richmond. A maker of precision aircraft components – rotative discs and turbine blades – the company is expanding operations to accommodate increased demand for the Airbus A380 and A350, Gulfstream G650, and Boeing 787.

"The demand for those is very strong, and it is causing us to add a significant amount of equipment," said Rolls-Royce executive Lorin S. Sodell in a report published in the Richmond Times-Dispatch. "Most of the people that we are hiring are for our production facilities and for our manufacturing services here, which is equipment maintenance. The skills needed for those jobs include mechatronics, high-tech equipment maintenance, and CNC machining.”

The equipment used at the Rolls-Royce plant is about as advanced as it gets. With this new expansion, the company expects to add about $40 million worth of production equipment this year alone. Nearly all of it is comprised of automated systems and robotics. It takes a very special skill set to work with this equipment.

ECPI University was among the first colleges to develop an academic program to develop professionals for this kind of work. Our Mechatronics program focuses on real-world applications of engineering principles, incorporating curriculum that encompasses the three key skill sets required within the advanced manufacturing industry:

  • Electronics
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • Computer and Information Science

Specifically, the program includes classes covering core areas such as:

  • Programmable Controllers
  • Hydraulics and Pneumatics
  • Applied Mechanics
  • Testing and measuring instruments.
  • Computer Hardware and Software
  • Analog/Digital Electronics and Communications
  • Automation and Control Systems
  • Computer Programming and Networks
  • Microcontrollers
  • Materials Science

B.J. Shaw recently graduated from ECPI University’s Richmond/Moorefield campus with a Mechatronics degree and got a job with Rolls-Royce right before graduation. “I was so happy when I got the offer. My life is so different now. I sleep well at night and I wake up in the morning looking forward to work. I could never say that before I went to ECPI University.”
