When Rosetta Spurgeon had a car accident that nearly robbed her of the ability to walk, she had just enrolled at ECPI University’s Columbia campus. She wanted to become a medical assistant. Suddenly, she found herself relying on medical professionals to help her heal and return to life as she knew it. She returned to campus many months later and learned there were people there waiting to help her, as well. She says, “Being a student at ECPI University helped me stay focused on my ‘big picture,’ all the while allowing me to be myself, to grow, and shine.”
Her experience typifies the atmosphere at the ECPI University, Columbia campus. “We know our students by name and care about them as people first,” says Shakiera Benson, a member of the Medical Assisting faculty. “Our class sizes are small so we really get to know our students so we can help them in a very personal way, allowing us to give them the kind of attention they need to be successful.”
Medical Assistant Program at ECPI University’s Columbia SC Campus
At ECPI University’s Columbia campus, student success begins with empowerment. Faculty and staff are focused on providing the resources that allow students to write their own success stories. At the onset, that means helping them identify something that aligns their interests with existing opportunities in the job market. For aspiring Medical Assistants, the outlook can be very bright indeed. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical assistants is projected to grow 29 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations.
What’s driving this growth? The aging baby-boomer population, for one, which is spurring demand for preventive medical services. The U.S. Department of Labor projects that as their practices expand, physicians will hire more assistants to perform routine administrative and clinical duties, allowing the physicians to see more patients.
So, if you like the idea of working in healthcare but you’re not quite sure what a Medical Assistant does, this could be part of any typical day:
- Take and record patient history and personal information
- Measure vital signs
- Help the physician with patient examinations
- Give patients injections as directed by the physician
- Schedule patient appointments
- Prepare blood for laboratory tests
It’s exciting work, but it does require some education. At ECPI University, the medical assisting program is comprehensive, yet accelerated. Through our year-round program, you could earn an Associate of Applied Science in Health Science degree with a concentration in Medical Assisting in just 17 months!
It was the right move for Rosetta Spurgeon. “I am dedicated to achieving my success, learning, and being the best Rosetta that I can be.” If you’d like to follow in her footsteps, click here to get more information.
