A Master of Science in Information Systems prepares you for a leadership position in Information Technology. Common Courses in an MIS Degree

What classes are important to your degree and to your future career? Initially, you will be focused on a core curriculum that includes exposure to topics such as object-oriented programming, database management systems, information security policy and practice, virtualization and cloud computing, software engineering, and the design and management of information system projects.

With all that under your belt, having amassed 30 semester credit hours, you will move on to the elective portion of your MIS degree. Here, you will be able to choose between specializing in the management of information system security, cloud computing, mobile information systems, or special topics in information systems. You will earn six semester credits for this work.

Finally, you will be expected to embark on a series of three externships. These must all have the approval of the course director. You will be expected to commit to between 20 and 40 hours per week of full-time university study, including the time required to check in with your externship mentor. These courses are pass/fail and are compulsory to remaining in the externship program.

Where Do You Go From Here?

What happens next? The MIS will have prepared you for a number of options. Graduates of the MIS course go on to become desktop, web, or mobile application managers. Other graduates grow up to become network architects, who go on to work on wireless networks. Cyber security is also a growing field.
