Massage Therapy Students Help at NFL Training Camp
Washington Redskins Invite Massage Therapy Students to Participate!
For the fourth straight year, the Washington Redskins have selected ECPI University students to provide massage therapy services to its players during summer training camp. Massage Therapy students from the Richmond/Moorefield campus will be on hand to provide muscle relief to players following practice and workout sessions during the three-week camp in Richmond, Virginia.
“This opportunity provides real-life sports massage scenarios that will be of tremendous benefit to our students,” says ECPI University Richmond/Moorefield Campus President Ashley Richards. “Professional athletes are quite obviously different than most people as their muscles are large and well-defined. Our students will have the opportunity to make connections between this experience and the body parts they are trying to address visually and kinesthetically.”
ECPI University’s Massage Therapy students will be working alongside the team’s athletic trainers, physical therapists, and doctors to provide the highest quality of massage therapy to the entire team. ECPI University’s educational program, as well as its partnership with the Redskins and the team’s medical staff, is designed to facilitate professional growth and hands-on experience for its students.
Providing this kind of care to professional athletes is both challenging and rewarding. Most notably, students will be working with highly-motivated people who are committed to daily improvement and appreciate any efforts that can help them excel. The physical demands of these athletes are rigorous, allowing the students to observe how the demand on one muscle or joint can affect movement, posture, pain, and more.
“This is an incredible opportunity,” says ECPI University Massage Therapy student Matthew Bellamy-Parham. “To work on world-class athletes with the kind of muscle mass and definition these players possess offers us a learning opportunity like no other.”
ECPI University Massage Therapy students receive highly-specialized instruction that focuses on both the art and science of massage therapy. Topical areas of instruction include:
- Human Anatomy and Physiology
- Musculoskeletal Anatomy
- Pathophysiology
- Medical Massage
- Eastern Modalities
- Swedish Massage
- A Massage Therapy Clinical Rotation
In addition to possibly working with professional athletes, graduates also can work in spas, fitness facilities, wellness centers, private practice, and various healthcare settings. Massage therapists are also in demand. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of massage therapists is projected to grow 22 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations.
