Manufacturing Companies in Southwest Virginia Experiencing Impressive Expansion
Gain the Skills for These Jobs at ECPI University
Southwest Virginia’s manufacturing sector continues to grow with two new major economic development announcements adding to the resurgence. First, the Botetourt County Board of Supervisors has just given the green light for a new automotive parts factory, unanimously voting to transfer $2 million in state grant money to the county’s Economic Development Authority, which will turn the funds over to Eldor Corp. of Italy.
The Roanoke Times reports that this incentives package is tied to Eldor’s promise to invest $75 million to build its first North American production plant in the county’s Greenfield industrial park, creating up to 350 jobs over the next four years. The company plans to launch mass production at the plant by mid-2018.
The second announcement comes from Buena Vista, Virginia where the Munters Corporation has announced it will invest $2.5 million to update its existing 270,000-square-foot manufacturing facility. According to a news report from Virginia Business, this project is expected to create 100 new jobs.
Based in Sweden, Munters produces a variety of products across a wide range of industries, including energy recovery systems, dehumidification systems, and air-handling equipment. Customers include companies in the data center industry, as well as food and pharmaceutical sectors.
In another report from the Roanoke Times, Munters’ director of Virginia operations, Don Driscoll said the company’s selection of the Buena Vista operation to be a centerpiece of the corporation’s data center production “is a testament to the craftsmanship, skill and professionalism of our local workforce” and to the state’s favorable business climate.
Schools like ECPI University are one reason why Virginia is so popular with manufacturers. At ECPI University, we offer programs that are directly aligned with the technological skills required in advanced manufacturing.
In today’s modern plants, robots and automated systems do a lot of the work. However, the people who work at these facilities are highly skilled in areas such as electronics, mechanical engineering, and computer and information systems – which is exactly what we teach in our Mechatronics program. In our hands-on learning environment, you can learn about key elements such as:
- Hydraulics and Pneumatics
- Testing and measuring instruments.
- Computer Hardware and Software
- Applied Mechanics
- Materials Science
- Analog/Digital Electronics and Communications
- Automation and Control Systems
- Programmable Controllers
- Computer Programming and Networks
- Microcontrollers
Plus, you can finish college much faster at ECPI University. Through our year-round, accelerated schedule, you can earn your Bachelor of Science Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology with a concentration in Mechatronics in as little as 2.5 years – or earn your Associate degree in just 1.5 years.
Earning your Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering Technology could prepare you for some of these emerging jobs. If you’d like to learn more, take a moment and connect with a helpful admissions advisor who will be happy to answer all of your questions.
