IT Worker Shortage in South Carolina Becoming a Serious Problem
Prepare for One of the Thousands of Unfilled Jobs at ECPI University
A new study has revealed that the skills gap within South Carolina’s IT profession is more severe than many may have realized. It-oLogy, a nonprofit IT technology organization, has found that in the fourth quarter of 2016, there were 6,424 open IT jobs. Of the 500 employers surveyed, 91 percent reported between one and five open positions which typically take up to six months to fill, and 57 percent reported plans to increase their number of IT positions within the next five years.
In a news report published in the Columbia Regional Business Report, It-oLogy President and CEO Tammy Mainwaring says the state is nowhere close to meeting the demand. “Not a lot of students are even going into IT or showing interest in high school,” she said. “They really don’t think IT is a cool career for them, so we need to change that message. You have to grab them early, and give them that confidence.”
You know what is cool? Working in a profession with excellent earning potential. Let’s take a look at the numbers. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, here is the median wage for employees in the following professions:
- Web Developers - $66,130
- Information Security Analysts – $92,600
- Software Developers – $102,280
Moreover, It-oLogy estimates the average tech wage in South Carolina alone to be $76,589.
