While the Charlotte region has been long-known as a center for financial services, the IT sector has quickly emerged as one of the city’s major industries. According to the Charlotte Chamber, the city is ranked number one as a Tech Momentum Market for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, number nine among large cities for highest STEM job growth, and number 11 for highest startup growth.
The Charlotte region is home to a wide range of prominent tech companies such as Aramark Healthcare Technologies, Randstad Technologies, HP Enterprise Services, Cisco Systems, Microsoft, and iQor. In addition to technology-based companies, there are large number of major employers that account for a significant portion of the region’s technology employment jobs, including:
- Carolinas Healthcare System
- Wells Fargo
- Bank of America
- Novant Health
- Duke Energy
- Lowe’s Companies, Inc.
- TIAA
- Time Warner Cable
- Belt
- AT&T

While the IT sector continues to grow, many employers are struggling to fill tech jobs because there are simply not enough qualified applicants to go around. So if you’re thinking about changing careers are trying to select one, now is the time to consider a career in information technology. Of course, these jobs do require certain skills which means you will need to go to school, but that does not necessarily mean spending the next four years in college.
At ECPI University and its Charlotte campus, we offer an accelerated, year-round program which allows you to earn an Associate’s degree in just 1.5 years or you can continue on for another 12 months and earn your Bachelor’s degree in just 2.5 years. “We have been tremendously successful helping our students acquire the skills they need to succeed in the IT profession,” says ECPI University Campus President Victor Riley.
“What’s been especially rewarding is helping people who never considered attending college, people who live in the more rural areas of our region where the IT profession does not necessarily enjoy a high profile. Places like Gastonia and Concord, North Carolina or Rock Hill and Fort Mill, South Carolina. Students from communities like those drive a short distance to our campus and within a minimal period of time, they’ve completed their studies, acquired the skills they need, and begin working in the field making a very good living.”
