Housing From your College or University

Some schools provide low-cost apartments just for international students. This gives you a chance to live with other international students who are studying alongside you as well as get to know your surrounding area with your new roommates.

Off-Campus Housing

If you have a family or want more privacy, you may want to consider applying for off-campus housing. This is a great option for international students because it provides the chance to become a part of a wider community, make the space you own, and get some peace and quiet when needed. You get to build a home away from home.

Your university should have a Housing manager who can help you secure off-campus housing and get settled. When looking for an apartment or room in the community, you’ll want to know the safety of the neighborhoods, the availability of public transport, the price range of an apartment, the lease, how to pay for utilities, and finding a roommate, if needed. Your housing manager should provide you with that information.

Homestays

Homestays are an ideal option for international students who are under the age of 18 and are nervous about living in a new country. With homestay arrangements, students are placed with an American family close to their campus. Meals will be provided and one will have their own room. This option will allow you to understand American culture better and can get the comforts of home and family life.

How Does ECPI University Provide a Place to Live for International Students?

ECPI University does not provide on-campus housing or dormitories. The University, however, provides international student housing off campus and acknowledges the need for assistance in finding proper housing for these students. Whether you prefer living alone, would want to find a roommate to share expenses, or would want to move in with your spouse and children, the Student Housing Manager will provide individualized assistance for your housing requirements.

The Student Housing Manager works to secure housing facilities that are safe, conveniently located, cost-effective, and appropriate for students. Any international student admitted to any of the four campus locations can get assistance in securing Housing.

Off-campus housing typically includes a furnished two-bedroom apartment in a quiet community in close proximity to shops, restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations, and campus. The apartment can house up to four students. Every community includes a fitness center, swimming pool, and internet access. Housing fees also include utilities. A Housing Representative will help you with your application and will provide more information about housing options.

How Living in America Different from What the Students Might Be Used to?

“Living in the U.S.” may have a different meaning to everyone. American culture has been enriched by the values of almost every part of the world. This diversity is valuable to many international students. As such, you may be challenged with new situations if the American culture is different from what you’re used to at home. American customs in the classroom, at restaurants, and in everyday life can feel strange. Also, students and teachers in the U.S interact differently and the same is true in social situations.

Starting out as an international student can feel lonely and intimidating, so you may want to get to know as many people as you can while you learn more about the culture. However, if you want to develop your interactions into deeper friendships, you must be more assertive and learn different ways of communication. Before your departure, take the initiative to familiarize yourself with American culture to make your transition as easy as possible.
