Guy Fieri’s Smokehouse Opening in Norfolk in Spring 2017
Bringing New Job Openings and Opportunities for Culinary Arts Graduates
Celebrity chef and host of the Food Network show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” is planning on opening a barbecue restaurant in Spring 2017 in Norfolk’s Waterside District. He announced his excitement about the plans on his official Facebook page with a video showing his enthusiasm for both opening his new eatery and spicing up the Norfolk restaurant scene.
Internationally-trained chef Guy Fieri opened his first restaurant, Johnny Garlics, in California in 1996. From there, he built a culinary empire. He hosted TV shows and opened several restaurants, including Guy Fieri’s American Kitchen and Guy’s Burger Joint. He holds a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management from the University of Nevada, Reno. Now he’s bringing his talents and techniques to Norfolk, Virginia.
Along with the Smokehouse, other restaurants in Waterside will be Cogan’s Pizza and Carolina Cupcakery. The Barbeque Hall of Famer described his excitement at joining the Norfolk restaurant district, stating it was, “just plain awesome.” When it comes time to hire qualified kitchen staff who will be preparing his signature dishes, Fieri won’t have far to look.
The Culinary Institute of Virginia (CIV), also located in Norfolk, gives students not only the theory and instruction they need to become exemplary chefs, but also the hands-on experience required to practice their craft. With students learning how to cook, manage a kitchen, and prepare a variety of food, they will have the fundamentals needed to shine in a restaurant like Guy Fieri’s Smokehouse.
There is no doubt that competition to work in the restaurant will be tough. Working for a celebrity chef is an incredible opportunity for anyone interested in the culinary arts. CIV graduates, in addition to classroom instruction, all work in the institute’s kitchens and perform an externship to gain real world experience.
