Khaled Mohamed maintains a grueling schedule. On most days, he works the nightshift from 7 pm to 7 am, heads to class an hour later, goes home home in the early afternoon for a few hours sleep, and then starts the cycle all over again. Yet, you will never her him complain. He’s just grateful for the opportunity.

It’s all taking place a long way from Egypt, where he grew up. It’s also much different from what he had in mind. Upon arriving in America in 2009, his plan was to get a job in the food business and save up enough money to start a restuarant. There was only one problem: By the time the money started to accumulate, he realized the restuarant world was not for him. It was then that he decided he needed to go back to school. Turns out, it was a little easier said than done.

“I visited several schools but no one seemed able to validate and translate my academic records from Egypt,” says Khaled. “When I came to ECPI University, they knew just what to do. They worked through World Education Services to get my records and then helped me evaluate the academic program that best suited my interests. It was the first time I really got to decide what I wanted to study. In Egypt, it’s decided for you.”

Khaled says he was a little nervous at first. He says his English was good, but not quite as good as it needed to be, so he began by taking several English classes. He also took some communications courses that he says really helped learn how to operate in a team environment.

It appears those lessons really did the job. Although Khaled has not yet graduated, he is already working for MAU Workforce Solutions, a subcontractor at South Carolina’s BMW plant. In fact, he was just named employee of the month. “It’s been six long years since I first came to America, and to be honored in this way is just an amazing feeling,” he says. “It made my parents so happy and proud!”

Khaled will soon receive his Associate’s degree in Electronic Engineering Technology. He will then be eligible to work directly for BMW and will head back to ECPI University to begin working on his Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics. “I love working at BMW,” he says. “I really like being around electronics and whenever I am at work, I feel just like a kid…it’s just so exciting! I am so thankful for all the people at ECPI University who helped me make to this point.”

It should be apparent by now that Khaled is a highly-focused individual and always has a plan. The next thing on his list: Get married and start a family. At the risk of sounding cliché, that sounds like the American dream.
