Facebook Expansion Includes Billion Dollar Data Center Near Richmond, VA
Prepare for Jobs Just Like These at ECPI University
Social media and networking giant Facebook has announced plans to build a $1 billion dollar data center just outside Richmond, Virginia. In addition to the thousands of construction jobs, the company will need about 100 employees to run the facility, including cyber security experts, once it’s completed sometime in 2019.
According to a news report in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the center will be built in phases, beginning with a 1 million-square-foot data center on a 328-acre site at the White Oak Technology Park in eastern Henrico County. Additional phases are expected to include three more buildings totaling 1.5 million square feet.
When complete, this will be the company’s eighth data center in the United States, and according to Facebook Director of Data Center Strategy Rachel Peterson, it will be one of the most advanced, energy-efficient facilities in the world. In fact, through an agreement with Dominion Energy, the construction of solar facilities will ensure that it is powered by 100 percent renewable energy.
When companies like Facebook invest this kind of money into a data center, you can be sure security is going to be a top priority. The company will certainly have a top cyber and network security team whose sole job it is to ensure data is safe from hackers, 24/7 and 365 days a year.
