Esports Season Kicks Off for the ECPI University Rams

The ECPI University Rams kick off the collegiate Esports fall season with a Hearthstone match on Tuesday, September 17 at 8:00PM. The Rams will be competing in six different games across the 2019/20 season.

Esports is one of the fastest growing competitive scenes. Newzoo, one of the world's leaders in Esports, mobile and gaming trends, reported the global Esports revenue in 2018 reached $906 million, up 38 percent from 2017.

The Rams are one of around 600+ schools to have an Esports team out of over 4,000 post-secondary schools in the United States.

ECPI University will compete in events sanctioned both by the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE), the Eastern Coast Athletic Conference Esports (ECAC), Tespa, and College League of Legends (CLoL).

The Rams field teams in:

  • Hearthstone
  • League of Legends
  • Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO)
  • Overwatch
  • Paladins
  • Rocket League

Hearthstone is a turn-based card game based in the realm of World of Warcraft. Players build decks of up to 30 cards with the objective of eliminating the 30 health points their opponent starts with. Hearthstone matches are currently schedule to be played on Tuesdays at 8 PM EST.

League of Legends, arguably the most popular Esports game in the world, is a game where teams of five select champions to destroy the enemy nexus, or hub, of the opposing base. Throughout the game, there are other objectives teams can complete to increase the chance of winning.

CS:GO is widely consider the premier FPS (first-person shooter) game in the world.  It's a game where two teams of 5 work to eliminate the other team while also handling in game objectives. One team works to capture a point and plant a bomb at one of two sites while the other team works to prevent the plant or to defuse the bomb in time if it is planted.

Overwatch is a first-person shooter designed by Blizzard Entertainment where teams of six compete to complete or defend objectives. In a twist this year, teams are required to select two tanks (high health characters), two DPS (damage dealers) and two supports (character who heal) out of a pool of 31 heroes.

Paladins is a similar game to Overwatch where teams of five compete to defend or complete objective by selecting from a pool of heroes. Paladins contains 42 different heroes who are classified by four different classes: damage, front line (tanks), flanker (agile champions who can survive on their own) and support.

Rocket League is a game where you control rocket powered cars to play soccer in a futuristic world. The three main modes are 2 vs 2, 3 vs 3 and 4 vs 4.

All matches will be broadcasted on the ECPI University Rams Twitch page. In addition, the team schedule is updated regularly so everyone can keep up with the matches.

Join the fun! Active students can try out for the RAMS anytime by visiting the official Rams Esports page and filling out a simple tryout request form, and you can join the Rams Discord channel and be part of the conversation even if you can't join the team!
