ECPI University Focuses on Student Employability with Career Fair
On September 14, 2016, ECPI University hosted the second major career fair for this year, drawing a diverse group of employers from iHeartMedia to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The career fair took place at the Virginia Beach campus. Employers packed three different floors with brochures, pamphlets, and one-on-one time for ECPI University students and alumni.
Dominion Enterprises – seeking software and web development students, as well as interns – was looking for candidates with basic web developer skills, including programming and markup languages such as HTML and Java Script. Dominion Enterprises employee and ECPI University alum Johnathan Hofler returned to campus to help the company recruit.
TEK Systems recruiters are currently hiring for hundreds of positions. The company is looking for developers, programmers, analysts, help desk technicians, desktop support, cyber security specialists, administrators, and much more. Recruiter Trent Johnson looks for three main qualities from potential employees; coach-ability, a hunger to learn, and a desire to set goals.
Representatives from engineering and technical support company JT3 were on the lookout for both electronic engineering technology and mechatronics students. Employee Tony Tillmann says he likes to hire those who would work as a team and are, “willing to learn more.”
A team from Texas Instruments was also looking to hire EET and mechatronics majors for positions such as equipment technicians and facility technicians. Randy Shilling emphasized hands-on experience. Johnathon Park says employees need to be able to communicate well with their peers, in addition to working as a team. Adi Bhandarr also highlight teamwork as an important quality for Texas Instruments employees.
Criminal justice students and graduates didn’t have to look far for potential employers. Among the police departments represented were the Norfolk Sherriff’s Office, the Suffolk Police Department, the Chesapeake Police Department, and the Virginia Beach Police Department. The Suffolk department was represented by Sargent Jennifer Weatherly and Master Police Officer Sherry Fellers. Weatherly says the department is looking to hire officers who are, “motivated, have high integrity, and are looking to help.”
Homeland security students had a chance to stop by the U.S Customers and Border Protection table to meet with recruiters Danny Trieff and Rachel Thomas. Looking for entry-level CBP (customs and border patrol) officers, Trieff stressed good communication skills, ability to meet the position’s requirements, and a willingness to relocate.
It’s clear from talking to employers that education and technical skills are highly important for their potential employees, but soft skills, such as communication and teamwork, are also greatly valued. Students looking to land jobs not only need field knowledge, but also the ability to work well with their peers and managers.
