ECPI University Announces New Accelerated Paramedic (EMT) Program
First of its Kind Program
ECPI University’s Newport News campus is now accepting applications for its new Paramedic (EMT) program. While many programs can take up to 27 months to complete, this new year-round program can allow students to earn their Associate of Applied Science in Emergency Medical Services in as little as 16 months. Those who are already EMTs can complete the program even faster, about a year after starting.
Aside from being the only accelerated program of its kind in Virginia, it also the only Paramedic program of any kind between the Virginia Peninsula region and Richmond.
At ECPI University, students can acquire the complex knowledge and skills required to provide advanced patient care and transportation to hospital emergency rooms. Other duties for Paramedics/EMTS involve:
- Responding to 911 calls for emergency medical assistance, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or bandaging a wound
- Evaluating a patient’s condition and determining a course of treatment
- Delivering first-aid treatment or life support care to sick or injured patients
- Reporting observations and treatment to physicians, nurses, or other healthcare facility staff
- Documenting medical care given to patients
- Replacing and cleaning supplies and equipment after use
ECPI University’s Paramedic (EMT) program is designed to meet the needs of students who are working fulltime by offering day, night, and weekend classes. In addition to coursework, ECPI University’s program includes an extensive structured 270 hour in-hospital clinical component, with experienced preceptors at various medical centers, and a field internship with an urban EMS agency.
Upon completion, graduates are eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians exam and then enter the field as a Paramedic/EMT. Applicants for these positions must be capable of passing the following assessments:
- Drug screening
