Cyber Security Explained: What You Need to Know About the World of Cloud Computing

Just about everyone has heard of cloud computing by now, but not everyone knows what it means. To some, cloud computing is still nothing more than one of Silicon Valley's trendy buzzwords that go just as quickly as they come. But it's much more than just a buzzword, and it's certainly not just a fleeting trend.

What is cloud computing?

Cloud computing refers to the process of using data and applications over the internet as opposed to your personal computer's hard drive or your company's network. In fact, the word 'cloud' simply refers to the internet within this context.

An example of cloud computing in action is Google Docs, a free web-based app that lets users create, edit, and save documents and spreadsheets online. Users don't have to install a document management app in their computers or save all their files in storage devices, because cloud files are accessible anywhere and anytime, as long as users have a browser and internet connection.

There are many other examples of apps using cloud computing. They're otherwise known as cloud-based apps, and though their functionalities are different, the concept behind them is the same: They're provided as services over the internet, and for the paid ones, a subscription is required before users can access them.

How did it start?

In spite of how modern cloud computing sounds, the idea dates back to the 60s. It was first introduced by Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider who worked on the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) in his quest to connect people to one another, wherever they might be in the world.

Nevertheless, it was only in 2011 that the term 'cloud computing' was first used. At an industry conference, Eric Schmidt -- the then-executive chairperson of Google -- launched the term that became widely used in the succeeding years.

What are the advantages?

As the number of people connecting to the internet grows, so does the popularity of cloud computing. This is not a surprise considering how convenient it is to have everything you need within reach at any given time. It's okay if you forgot your USB flash drive at home because you can download your PowerPoint presentation from the cloud. It's not devastating if you misplaced your smartphone at the airport. Sad, yes, but not panic-inducing when you know your photos, messages, and contacts are saved in the cloud.

What are the disadvantages?

Cloud computing doesn't come without some risks. Though the internet is now more secure than ever before, thanks to advancements in technology, there's no denying that it's a frequent target of various kinds of cyber threats and malicious software. A security breach compromising confidential information can happen -- and it has happened with major companies like Target, Equifax, and JPMorgan Chase, to name a few. A mistake as simple as an unpatched vulnerability can be exploited, allowing an attack to enter and spread like a virus.
