Culinary Nutrition: Book Recommendations to Get You Started on Your Degree Program
Written by Kristen Rohrer, Nutrition/Arts & Sciences Faculty at the Culinary Institute of Virginia
We’re all familiar with hallmark figures in the cookbook world, like Julia Child and Betty Crocker. Now, more than ever, celebrities like Dr. Phil are also jumping on the culinary bandwagon when it comes to publishing cooking tutorials. It’s getting increasingly easier to find cookbooks on topics like baking and pastry, portion control and even complete lifestyles of eating, such as the Mediterranean diet.
However, there’s a ‘new kid on the block’ in the cookbook section, capable of providing culinary techniques that can boost nutrition, naturally reduce inflammation, and maybe even fight chronic disease. These new additions are not just cookbooks, they are reference manuals for culinary nutritionists and they are changing the face of the culinary world.
Resources for Future Culinary Nutrition Students
But what are some good resources for someone who is brand new to the field of culinary nutrition? Well, newbies can rejoice, because there has never been a better time than now for books to be published on the subject of culinary nutrition.
There are beginner books that introduce the reader to the field in general, and then there are nutrition books solely written for the professional chef. Regardless of the topic, there is something for everyone when it comes to learning about culinary nutrition.
This is especially well suited for people new to the field, because research is being published almost daily on the science of digestion in the face of disease. Culinary nutritionists can bypass some of the shortcomings of the body under certain conditions simply by utilizing different cooking techniques that boost healing, like acidic marinades, cooking with herbs and spices that fight blood sugar problems, and helping people heal themselves from the inside out.
Education: A Critical Piece of the Pie
Culinary nutrition is a topic that anyone can learn about when given a cookbook or textbook as a reference. However, reading about culinary nutrition and actually creating meals for clients and patients are two completely different notions.
We know that we are living in a world where chronic diseases are on the rise, along with comorbid conditions that plague patients while stealing quality of life. Because of this, the need for education on the complexities of the human body is essential. This is especially important today since seven of the top ten chronic diseases that Americans die from every day are said to be largely preventable with lifestyle and diet.
Formal education as a culinary nutritionist is the key that can unlock the door to a world of potential in helping people reach their health goals. Curiosity can start with a how-to book that provides general recommendations; however, the journey can continue with a solid, hands-on educational experience that can help you turn culinary concepts into a reality.
Why is Education so Important in this Field?
There is no cookbook that can guarantee success as a culinary nutritionist. It’s greatly dependent on passion, motivation, and heart. However, choosing the right program that can deliver innovative nutritional research-based curriculum with culinary techniques can put you ahead of the game.
Formal education in culinary nutrition fuses nutritional theories and science with culinary principles that are second nature to top chefs in the industry. At the end of the day, the right program can combine the fields that were once completely separate and create a delicious product in the form of optimal health applications for all who partake in your food.
