Charlotte, NC Explodes with New Technology Companies
ECPI University Helps Fuel Educated Workforce
One company is expanding, the other is starting up a whole new operation. The result: nearly 600 new IT and advanced manufacturing jobs coming to the Charlotte region, near an ECPI University campus. The tech sector is booming throughout the Carolinas and Charlotte in particular is certainly getting its fair share.
Expansion
EY (formerly known as Ernst & Young) has just announced plans to invest $8.2 million dollars during the next five years to create and then expand a new innovation center. Referred to as EY wavespace™, these centers are used to help clients catch the next wave in radical breakthroughs in business transformation by tapping into innovative thinking across EY disciplines, experience, and industry sectors.
Areas of focus include artificial intelligence, robotics process automation (RPA), blockchain, data analytics, digital, customer experience, and cyber security. “North Carolina is a powerhouse for financial and professional services because of the ambitious, talented people who live and work here and the educational and training resources at their fingertips,” said North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper in a prepared statement.
In the area of Computer and Information Science, ECPI University's Charlotte campus offers degree programs in:
- Cyber and Network Security – Graduates can learn how to create and build networks in Windows, CISCO, and UNIX environments, and design and implement network security plans to keep hackers at bay and networks secure.
- Cloud Computing – Graduates can learn how to set up servers and software clients, create large storage solutions, utilize cloud technologies, and deploy thin applications for large, medium, and small organizational networks.
New Advanced Manufacturing Facility
Metyx Group, a Turkish composite and technical fabrics manufacturer, also announced big plans for the Charlotte region. The company is preparing to build its first U.S. facility just south of the city, in Gaston County.
Metyx produces materials that are sold to manufacturers in the wind energy, marine, auto, and building construction industries. The new $12.6 operation is expected to create approximately 200 jobs. According to a news report in the Charlotte Business Journal, Metyx Group plans to install about $9 million in advanced manufacturing equipment. That equipment does not run itself. Facilities like this are run by professionals in areas such as electronics, mechanical engineering technology, and computer information science. If you’d like to do this sort of work, you can develop expertise in these areas through two programs offered at ECPI University’s Charlotte campus:
- Electronics Engineering – Learn how to use testing and measuring instruments to acquire data, analyze problems, and design a system or process.
- Mechatronics – Allows you the chance to develop and troubleshoot robotics solutions, programmable controllers, and integrated systems.
