Can International Students Apply for Scholarships?
Scholarships are valuable gifts that don't need to be paid back. Higher education can be quite expensive, especially for international students. There are thousands of scholarships that you can take advantage of and make your education more affordable. You can browse online for different types of scholarships offered by schools, private charities, non-profits, social or professional organizations, and colleges and universities.
How do I find scholarships online?
You can find scholarships in several ways over the internet. The easiest way is to contact the financial aid office of the university you are planning to attend. You can get helpful information from their online public library and evaluate whether you can qualify for various scholarships on offer.
However, it’s important to verify if the scholarship information and offers are legitimate. One way to identify fraudulent scholarships is when you are asked to make upfront processing fees for the scholarship. Always avoid any third-party websites claiming to offer scholarships. Instead, get accurate information from the official website of the college or university.
Why read the fine prints in scholarship forms?
Most scholarship applications often highlight exactly what the evaluation committee is looking for. To improve your chances of getting a scholarship, it’s advisable to keenly read through the fine prints and tailor your application to meet all the requirements. The not-so-obvious sections of the application form could provide a wealth of information that will make your application stand out. The most visible information is often about the eligibility criterion, for example, citizenship, permanent residency, grades, age, references, etc.
The hidden layer of information is what often makes the difference. It could be in the links embedded in the first layer of information. So, don’t assume any links in the online application form. If the application requires an essay, the links could provide further instructions on the requirements. In some cases, the fine prints could even include a scoring sheet that gives you insights into what the committee is looking for and your possible scores.
Types of International Scholarships
Choosing the right school is often a difficult decision for international students. As if that was not hard enough, paying for the chosen program may be difficult as well. Fortunately, many reputable universities, such as ECPI University, offer a broad range of scholarships to support international students in meeting their financial obligations.
However, applicants must meet the admission requirements for the programs they choose as well as the scholarship application criteria. Other than the scholarship offered by the university, international students have access to several other scholarship opportunities through student competitions and awards based on association affiliations, study fields, etc. Here are the some of the scholarships ECPI University offers for international students:
Merit Scholarship
If you are a high achieving high school or college graduate, the Merit Scholarship could be your best suit. Universities award a select number of Merit Scholarships for various programs every year. The minimum scores may differ from program to program. Applicants must complete their admission paperwork to be eligible for the scholarship. The minimum high school or college grade point should average an equivalent of 2.75 or more.
Head Start- Experience in the Field Scholarship
Choosing to further your career in your field of practice can be rewarding. If you already have substantial work experience, some universities will reward you for taking an initiative to gain further experience. It’s an appreciation for the skills and knowledge you already gained in your career field. You may be required to submit a recommendation letter from your previous or current employer to verify your work and accomplishments in the field.
Founder’s Scholarship
ECPI University's founders have established foundations to sponsor students who wish to advance their careers but are unable to do so due to financial constraints. The scholarships are meant for deserving students who need extra financial aid. More often, applicants are required to submit evidence of their financial status, social status, or disability.
Refer a Friend Scholarship
When you study together with your friends in a foreign land, schooling can be quite fulfilling. Share the experience of studying in your university of choice with your friends and be rewarded with a scholarship when your friends eventually enroll.
Scholarship Policies
Once you receive a scholarship, you should maintain a 3.00 GPA to continue benefiting from the awarded scholarships. Every year, GPAs are reviewed to align with the shifting trends in higher education. Again, these scholarships are available only for international students.
