Interested in becoming a nurse? You're not alone. Nursing is a popular profession renowned for its high job satisfaction, flexible scheduling, and quick paths to getting started.
A bachelor's to BSN degree program can help aspiring nurses reach their academic goals a little quicker. Through this kind of degree program, anyone with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university can earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in as little as one year. How is that possible? Here are some frequently asked questions and answers.
What kind of bachelor’s degree is required?
Any major is acceptable. Business, history, communications, biology, education, psychology, you name it! If you've earned a Bachelor's degree in the past, you've already taken the core classes, which are the same for any Bachelor's degree. Depending on your undergraduate transcript, you may be required to take some prerequisite courses prior to enrollment. However, those classes can often be taken at night or online so as not to disrupt your life too much.
What kind of workload can I expect?
You will be in class four to five days per week. Make no mistake; the pace is a bit intense. There are no breaks in between sessions and you will be required to perform the same number of clinical hours as your counterparts participating in traditional nursing programs. It’s a lot of work, but the results can be worth it. In just 12 months, you can be eligible to take the NCLEX-RN examination and become a registered nurse.
What are the admissions standards?
Requirements vary by school and the applicant’s academic transcript. Minimum GPA requirements can fluctuate between 2.5 and 3.0, with sub-requirements for cumulative GPAs within the sciences. In addition, there is often a screening test and background check.
What kind of people enroll in this program?
Many of the people who enroll in these programs are career switchers. They’ve been working in a completely different field and are looking to make a big change. They are highly-motivated, take their studies very seriously, and have high expectations of themselves. According to the American Association of College Nurses, accelerated students excel in class and are eager to gain clinical experiences. What’s more, faculty often views them as exceptional learners who are not afraid to challenge their instructors.
Why not just get an associate degree and take the NCLEX-RN exam?
Ironically, doing so would likely take between six months to a year longer. More importantly, having a BSN can put you ahead of other candidates. The American Association of College Nurses reports that graduates of accelerated programs are more mature, possess strong clinical skills, and are fast learners.
