7 of the Hottest Hospitality & Tourism Jobs (You Probably Haven't Thought Of)
What's better than living a life where you are always surrounded by fabulous people, delicious food, and exciting destinations? Not much -- and that's why hospitality and tourism jobs are some of the best in the world. Whether you want to stay local or pack up your life and move around the world, the doors a degree in hospitality can open could take you wherever you want to go.
General Manager
The top of the food chain. The head honcho who calls the shots from the kitchen to the cleaning supply room. Being a GM means making sure the maids tidy up the rooms and that the front desk staff are always cheery and smiling. In many hotels, the GM also manages promotions and point programs for guests. This is a job you won't walk into right out of college, but with 5+ years of experience and a BS in Hospitality Management, your patience and the experience you could gain could be very rewarding.
Human Resources Director
What makes a great hotel a great hotel? The people. The Human Resources Director makes sure that the hotel has the right people in the right jobs. If you are a "people person" who can recognize talent and put it in the right position, you could make your hotel shine and give your guests an experience they'll never forget. For this job, you'll need a Bachelor's in Business Administration, a strong knowledge of accounting/payroll, and enough experience under your belt to prove that you can do the job.
Food Service Manager
Hotels are magnets for people wanting to celebrate everything from weddings and retirement to class reunions and company parties. Great food is what keeps those parties going strong, and the Food Service Manager is responsible for helping keep the hotel's restaurant operations running smoothly. From managing staff to checking inventory, the Food Service Manager is the person pulling the strings to ensure the guests have a pleasant dining experience, whether it's dinner for two or an entire family reunion.
Sales Manager
If you enjoy the thrill of sales and working with people, then this is the perfect position for you. The job requires being able to leverage your hotel's assets and features then conveying these advantages to potential guests. The position requires a keen eye for detail, the ability to determine the best marketing strategies, and the skills to lead your sales team to their targets each month.
Guest Services Manager
This is a broad position that makes you the top liaison in the hotel. Guests need extra pillows? The Honeymoon couple wants a bottle of bubbly? Maybe Mr. Johnson in #305 needs a razor. Whatever the request, it is your job to ensure your guests are happy. One day you might schedule a tour while the next you help make airline reservations. No two days in this job are the same and it's a perfect position for someone who enjoys thinking on their feet and putting a smile on a customer's face.
Marina Manager
They say that the only thing that separates the men from the boys is the price of their toys . . . and the biggest boys all have yachts. Of course, no ship can be at sea all the time and that means yachts spend much of their time tied to the docks of the world's finest marinas. Someone has to make sure the leases are paid, the fees collected, and that no one scratches the multi-million dollar investments under your watch.
Cruise Director
Ready to exercise your sea legs? The Cruise Director makes sure that guests know everything they need to know about the ports of call and the ship's features/amenities. This fun job involves plenty of travel and the opportunity to explore new destinations while meeting people from all around the world. Best of all . . . you get paid to travel and encourage others to do the same.
