3 Tremendous Rewards of Becoming a Prenatal Sonography Technician
Not many professions allow you to share life's most remarkable and memorable moments with people on a daily basis. But that's exactly what you'll do if you become a prenatal sonography technician.
Officially, you would be part of a team that helps ensure that mothers and their unborn babies are healthy. Your job will be to use high-tech imaging equipment to create images and conduct tests. You'll prepare patients for procedures, maintain the equipment, and review images plus test results to make sure they are reliable. And of course, you'll work with physicians to provide summary findings that lead to diagnoses.
Those are the official duties (according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics)--and they are extremely important. But the true rewards of becoming a prenatal sonography technician come from working with the patients.
Here is a look at three of the greatest rewards you could experience once you have completed your education and become a prenatal sonography technician:
1. Unbridled Joy
There is nothing that compares to being pregnant. For all parents, it's a process filled with emotions ranging from excitement, uncertainty, concern, and joy. For couples and mothers carrying their first child, these emotions are even more intense.
And it could be your job to be there on the best day of your patients' lives!
Patients often feel a strong bond with their prenatal sonography technician because you are the person who gives them the first look at their baby. You are the person who assures them that everything is alright. And you are the person who is most likely to be hugged immediately when they find out if they're having a boy or a girl.
Most of your patients will be so excited about the pregnancy that they will always be happy and full of joy. It's a job benefit that few people get to experience--and it's nothing short of amazing.
2. Long-Term Relationships
Your role as a prenatal sonography technician is critical throughout the course of an entire pregnancy. The images you provide in the first trimester are every bit as important as the images you provide in the second and third trimesters.
This means you'll get to know your patients.
One of the greatest rewards of working in health care is the ability to build long-term relationships with people. Your patients will likely share their hopes, dreams, desires and fears with you. They'll come to see you as a trusted adviser, and your education and real-world experience will be valuable to them as you guide them through the nine months of pregnancy.
There may be times when a pregnancy doesn't go well or becomes complicated, and your role is every bit as important in these moments as it is in the joyous moments. Your patients will depend on you for answers and advice. You and the physicians with whom you work will be among your patients' most important advisers.
You'll meet people from all walks of life. You will likely become their confidant, their shoulder on which they lean during the challenging times and, ultimately, someone they'll remember for the rest of their lives. Not every job delivers those kind of rewards.
3. Flexibility
Some jobs provide flexibility when it comes to where you can work. Some don't. The good news for prenatal sonography technicians is that they can have a lot of flexibility. You could have the flexibility to move across the country if you'd like, apply for positions with different medical providers, and know that there is a high likelihood that you will always be able to find meaningful employment.
That's not something you'll find in every job.
