A 2015 graduate of ECPI University with a bachelor’s degree in business management, Shanice Dockins' journey to empowerment advocate and CEO is a testament to her unwavering determination, resilience, and the transformative power of higher education.
Shortly after high school graduation in Georgia, the typically introverted Dockins made a life-altering decision to move to Virginia Beach. At the tender age of 17, she escaped a difficult home life to embark on this journey solo, facing financial hurdles and limited transportation options. However, her determination led her to attend ECPI University.
It was ECPI’s fast-paced business program that provided Dockins with a dynamic learning environment that constantly challenged her in new and exciting ways. While her journey was far from easy, it was precisely these challenges that fueled her growth and development. The university's commitment to academic excellence and practical knowledge equipped her
with the skills necessary to succeed both in school and, upon graduation, the competitive world of business management.
According to Dockins, ECPI University is a place where students can explore diverse career paths, forge lasting connections, gain invaluable experiences, and acquire the leadership tools and skills necessary for the journey ahead.
During her time at ECPI, Dockins was actively involved in the Business Club where she honed her team- building skills and eventually rose to become Business Club President. It was here, Dockins shared, that she formed bonds that would last a lifetime, connecting with her peers and teachers who played a significant role in her educational journey. The network she built, combined with the support of Career Services and the guidance of inspiring educators, were instrumental in shaping her future.
After graduation, Dockins took a civilian role with the Air Force as a Contract Specialist, a role where she could put her business skills to meaningful use. Today, she proudly serves as the CEO of In Her Work, LLC, a position that allows her to empower women towards personal and professional success. Her ability to listen attentively and provide clear, concise plans of action has made her a driving force in the lives of those she mentors.
Dockins is also a published author of Unplugged, a collection of poems that aims to inspire and uplift others going through domestic abuse and trauma.
Because of her exceptional journey, Dockins can offer unique insights to current ECPI students and aspiring professionals alike. "Take your time, enjoy life and your studies,” she said. “Step out of your comfort zone, build a support system, and communicate with teachers and counselors.”
Dockins also encourages students to “create a plan of action based on your passions and execute it transparently." By following this advice, individuals can not only align their efforts with their true interests but also inspire others through their transparent and purposeful actions.
