Alumni Spotlight: There's Still Time

"I promised myself that I would graduate from college before turning 40 years old," said Rosa Hershel, a 2022 ECPI University graduate with a degree in Criminal Justice emphasizing Homeland Security.

With her 40th birthday within sight, she began to research universities. "I chose ECPI because I felt that it was a college that catered to adults, had a campus in my city, was accredited, and offered a fairly easy application process," said Rosa.

Initially, Rosa faced some challenges before starting her degree because her high school education was completed outside of the United States. Despite the fears of facing the college application process, and the complexities of high school credits earned, Rosa stuck with it. "All these steps were a challenge, but I'm so happy that I followed through and did not give up at the sight of obstacles," she said.

Once enrolled and taking classes at ECPI, Rosa cherished the variety of professors and diverse student body. The campus, even with the challenges of COVID, provided the college experience she always wanted.

Now a Senior Case Specialist, Rosa meets participants face-to-face, installs electronic monitoring equipment, and evaluates English proficiency. "What I enjoy most about my job is that I get to serve not only my country and community but also do it with kindness and communicate vital information in Spanish to the participants in my caseload," said Rosa.

She advises students to always give it your best. "Don't give up no matter how hard or overwhelming it gets along the way," shared Rosa. "Show up for yourself because when you get to walk on that stage on graduation day, it will all be worth it."
