ECPI University Joins “Get Skills to Work” Initiative
Program Helps Veterans Transition into Advanced Manufacturing
E
CPI University has joined the Get Skills
to Work initiative, a coalition of indus-
try, educators, and non-profit organiza-
tions helping veterans discover careers in
advanced manufacturing. The partnership,
which includes the Manufacturing Institute,
GE, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Alcoa, and
more than 500 manufacturing companies,
will work with institutions of higher educa-
tion to further expand accelerated training
and certification opportunities for U.S.
veterans in advanced manufacturing.
“The Manufacturing Institute is proud to
partner with ECPI University, a school that
is highly-committed to investing in veterans
and workforce training,” says Manufactur-
ing Institute President Jennifer McNelly.
“Working with educators and employers,
we are creating real opportunities for tran-
sitioning service members to get the skills
they need to access in-demand manufac-
turing careers.”
“Everyone at ECPI University is very
pleased to participate in this partnership,”
says ECPI University Business Develop-
ment Specialist Paul Dockery. “For nearly
50 years, we have supported our veterans
and assisted them in reaching their educa-
tional goals with employment being a pri-
mary objective. Initiatives like this one will
allow us to continue our focus on providing
industry-driven programs and certifications
for transitioning veterans. The manufactur-
ing skills gap is real and so is the need for a
skilled workforce. With efforts like this, our
veterans can help close this gap.”
At a time when the manufacturing industry
has a well-documented skills gap, veterans
represent an important pipeline of talented
workers. Many veterans have training and
experience that match up to manufactur-
ing careers, in areas as diverse as welding,
machining, logistics, and maintenance. For
those veterans requiring additional training
and industry certifications to prepare for the
civilian manufacturing workforce, acceler-
ated postsecondary programs can bridge
the gap for transitioning veterans. That is
why expanding educational opportunities
through Get Skills to Work is so important
to the manufacturers in the coalition.
R
esidents from Atlantic Shores Retire-
ment Community in Virginia Beach put
their discerning palates to good use, serving
as judges at the recently-held Culinary
Institute of Virginia’s (CIV) “Soup-er Stars”
competition. The event pitted 10 student
teams against each other to create the
most wildly-unique soup. As part of the CIV
Culinary Competition Series, aspiring chefs
worked in teams of two, in a fast-paced,
head-on competition to create a variety of
soups incorporating specific recipe require-
ments.
The winner: John and Connie’s delicious
Zuppa Stars and Soup (tomato basil with
fried mozzarella croutons). In support of
these next-generation chefs, Atlantic Shores
awarded a total of $4,500 in cash scholar-
ships for the top three winning culinary
teams, and to the best “Front of House”
team, that did the best job presenting their
soup and interacting with the judges.
Atlantic Shores makes an ideal partner for
such an event as it is widely-regarded for its
culinary excellence. It has five dining outlets
and a staff of about 100 food and beverage
professionals that create high-quality dishes
for daily meals, snacks, and on-site catered
events for its 650 residents and guests.
